Miles of beautiful beaches on this rare island property

“From the Toilet to the Tank”

December 4th, 2009 by Frances

We seem to have potty minds here at Amble. We’ve had more blog posts about toilets than I care to count. It’s understandable, though. Access to clean, potable water has always been a concern in developing countries, and it’s believed to be a major concern for all of us in the future. To be ecologically responsible, we have to think a lot about toilets.

So, read this article from Boing Boing and start getting used to the idea that we can reuse waste water after it’s been highly purified, and that some of us already are……Californians.

On Isla Palenque, we have no plans to make our waste water drinkable at this time, but we do plan to use fixtures and appliances that use less water (while still giving you a good shower) and to use greywater (from that nice shower) to irrigate the landscaping. We are looking into all kinds of water filtration as well, so guests and residents can feel assured that, although water is plentiful on the island, it is also precious to us.

One thing is sure, we won’t be dumping raw sewage into the ocean like some resorts do (I’m looking at you, Bocas del Toro). So when you’re looking for a resort vacation, don’t be taken in by a few solar panels on the roof of the hotel. Water is at least as important. Make sure they are using it responsibly.
