Direct Flights from US to David?

October 22nd, 2009 by Ben

A movement’s afoot. I posted a comment on Sam Talliaferros’ blog entry about the subject. Usually I consider Sam’s blog to provide some of the more trenchant insights into Panama, but in this case, I disagree strongly (as you can see in my comment). Sam just doesn’t seem to be displaying the kind of vision I’d expect from the man who basically made Boquete what it is today.

I share his libertarian skepticism of government spending, but that’s pretty much a done deal in the case of David’s airport expansion. And so pushing an airline to begin direct flights from the US is a matter for a coalition on visionary locals who want to better their situation.

On that front, there seem to be many of us willing to take things to the next step.  Anthony Arauz is one. He’s set up a blog to begin gathering support for the idea, and we stand behind him. There’s only so much you can gather from these sorts of online petitions, and it will take alot of work (herding cats is no easy tasks). But we firmly believe it can be done. In fact, at this point in the cycle of Chiriqui, I’d like to think that it’s an inevitability.

  1. My business (and I’m sure many others) looses customers every single week of the year because there isn’t a direct flight to David. We actually get 1 or 2 enquiries per week in which people decide against us because there isn’t a direct flight to us (and I have to say, our sales team is pretty good at closing sales).

The entire province of Chiriqui is ruled out by many people for a Panama holiday because getting and leaving here takes up 2 whole days most of the time.

Of Panama’s million and a half visitors maybe 15-20% are true tourists… of those the grand majority stay in the vicinity of Panama City because they’re aren’t direct flights elsewhere in the country.

Panama has benefited in someway from the international tourist campaigns in the last years, and if the goverment wants other parts of the country to benefit from tourism, international airports IS the solution.

There are easily 800 or more hotel rooms in the area.

  3. I have visited David three times for vacation. I would visit more if it wasn’t so difficult to get there. Often times I have to take an extra flight just to get into Panama. I enjoy the Las Olas Resort and have considered building a vacation home there. A direct flight from the US would benefit me and my extended family that could use the home. At this time we decided against it because getting there is so difficult. If Panama wants couples to invest in them – I think they should due the same.

  4. It would be great for direct flights to David I hope it happens in the near future. If and when it does the economy in the area will skyrocket!!
